Program Review

Sheridan Wagner

Sales Associate at Machine Shop

As what has seemed like a never ending wedding season here in Minneapolis dies down, it was nice to get out and network with the events industry’s finest at last month's ILEA October program. Hosted at The Brave New Workshop Comedy Theatre, with beautiful fall themed centerpieces provided by Sweet Pea’s Floral and a delicious greek buffet catered by The Tomato Vine, it was a perfect setting for a chef panel made up of four extremely talented women. Tami Cabrera of Muddy Paws Cheesecake Co., Michelle Gayer of Salty Tart, Tracy Kohler of Farina Baking Company and Diane Yang of Spoon and Stable & Bellecour took the stage to discuss what it’s like to be women in the culinary industry. The panel was moderated by Heidi Andermack and Amy Lynn Brown of the always delicious Chowgirls Killer Catering.

The women talked about everything from their favorite ingredients to social media to balancing life with families and their businesses. It was great getting to learn more about the culinary side of the industry first hand and learn more about these women’s journeys to how they got where they are today. I personally enjoyed getting to see all these women's different personalities come out when answering questions about their past and current jobs, lives, what they hate the most about the industry (please don’t ask any of these ladies to write on a cake in the near future) making the talk feel very personal and relatable. It was an afternoon filled with lots of laughs and some new insight into what it really takes to be some of the best bakers and chefs in the industry.

Star Awards Needs You!

Eager to meet more people in the industry and improve your craft? The 2018 Star Awards is looking for talented members to join the planning committee (and is also a perfect opportunity for students and emerging professionals as well). Getting actively involved with the ILEA MSP Chapter is one of the best ways to build valuable relationships and be a part of creating one of the region’s premier events.

The Star Awards first began in 2004 as a way to provide event professionals in Minnesota with an opportunity to gain recognition for the events they create, plan and execute each year. The 14th Annual event will focus on celebrating the fabulous nominees through a Reception, Awards Ceremony and After Party that features innovation and inspiration for our industry. Plus, it’s just one of the best parties of the year!

Help with any of these committees and member roles:

  • Awards & Entries
  • Marketing & Communication
  • Food & Beverage
  • Design & Décor
  • Production & Audio Visual
  • Entertainment
  • Volunteer Coordination (set-up, strike and at event)
  • Administration

As a Committee Member, your role will be to bring ideas and provide input in creating the plan for your area, assist in securing the products and services to execute that plan which may include contacting and negotiating with other ILEA members as necessary, and assist with set up, strike and/or on the day of the event. Committee Chairs will create sub-committee meeting schedules as needed to successfully accomplish their area’s goals for the event. Committee Members are required to be listed as an active ILEA member by December 31, 2017.  If you are not currently a member, December will also be your chance to take advantage of the half-year package. For more information, contact membership@ilea-msp.org.

Questions Please contact Lisa Marie Borchert, CSEP, 2018 Star Awards Director for more information and to get involved. starawards@ilea-msp.org.
