January 2017 Program
GET SOCIAL: #EVENTPROF STRATEGIES FOR SOCIAL MEDIA SUCCESS

At the beautiful James J. Hill Library on a slushy Minnesota day, surrounded by floor to ceiling book cases, Nick Borelli, Borelli Strategies, was introduced to present how to GET SOCIAL: #EVENTPROF STRATEGIES FOR SOCIAL MEDIA SUCCESS. After some brief networking time as attendees arrived, we sat down to the long wooden tables and chairs that most rental companies would love to own but here, come as the standard setup. Masculine soft seating and centerpieces of globes, calibers and cheeky titled books by BeEvents complimented the venue perfectly. And who knew Lake Elmo Inn did off-premise catering? We do now, and it was delicious!

While it was a bit ironic to be talking digital strategy amongst the paper stacks, everyone was engaged immediately as they were asked to join in an interactive experience using their phones. The first half of the presentation brought up issues that arise when using social media. Nick’s prime example was of a typical picture of a beautifully decorated venue that conveyed “Look at this thing I did”. He recommended instead captioning the picture with information regarding whose event it was (putting the focus on the client) and what is unique about their organization. Use social media to reach out to others with words of generosity. If you do post that pretty picture, tag it with thanks to the partners that made it happen, or the industry colleague whose work inspired you in the first place.

The final portion of the presentation was used to answer questions. One helpful tip Nick offered was using social media year round to stay top of mind, even if it’s an annual event. When ask about everyone’s obsession with getting the most likes or followers on social media platforms, Nick reiterated again and again how quality of followers is much more important than quantity. He also recommended that when using LinkedIn, don’t just click those easy skills buttons. Once a month take fifteen minutes to write a thoughtful recommendation. A positive referral will reflect back on you positively as well.

Throughout Nick’s engaging presentation his overarching theme was social media is a neutral, it’s not only for selling things or posting pictures of your food and cat. It can be used as a great marketing tool so long as it is implemented effectively.
